Why I’m Replaying Days Gone

And it feels as good as the first time, if not better.

In 2020, I started playing Days Gone. I had some free time and I got the game through my Playstation Now membership.

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much. Till then, I hadn’t heard many good things about the game. I was just going to give it a shot to see how it goes.

But was I pleasantly surprised!

A couple of weeks later, you’d find me playing the game for hours every day. I was aiming to finish the game in its entirety. The game was addictive, had a fantastic story, and had a larger-than-life feel to it.

The best part? The horde mechanism. When hundreds of “freakers” (zombies) run at you and you have to get rid of them, you get an experience like nothing else.

A few months ago, I purchased the game so that I can play it again. I haven’t replayed any other PS game so far. Days Gone isn’t even my favorite PS game. So, why did I decide to replay the game?

Gradual Unfolding of the Story

The story starts in a small way. Two bikers chasing someone, collecting bounties, working for camps, and so on.

But with time, you realize the titular character has more to share. His inner motivations, his journey to find what he seeks, his handling of different groups of villains, and the origin of the “freakers” — all unfolded in a perfectly paced manner.

The story had so many layers that I felt I could go through it again. And I was right.

Larger Than Life Narrative

Deacon St. John’s (protagonist) actions impact the world around him positively. Especially his work with the hordes changes the overall environment. The more hordes he kills, the fewer zombies you’d expect lurking around.

Deacon’s journey starts in a small way — two guys trying to ride north and get away from everything. From there, he becomes the central part of key challenges. He takes actions that no other can.

It’s different from other games like Last of Us, where you get a slice-of-life kind of story. Or Uncharted where you go on an adventure that’s grand yet happens…
